Transcendent Wisdom of the Maya

Transcendent Wisdom of the Maya is an incredibly interesting book on many levels; it is factual, academic, personal and insightful.

Written by anthropologist Gabriela Jurosz-Landa, the book is divided into three parts, each clearly defined and well recorded. The first of these describes aspects of Mayan history, culture, beliefs and the effects of Western society. I found the chapters on the Mayan concepts of time and calendars really fascinating as these are quite different from what we are used to in the West.

The second part of the book is called Diary of Life with the Maya and gives a personal account of Gabriela’s return to the Mayan people after living away from Guatemala for a number of years. This account also provides an understanding of the Mayan peoples’ contact with the West over the past few decades and why there may be a distrust of Westerners within this very private culture.

The final part of the book is called The Spiritual Journey and describes Gabriela’s initiation as a shaman-priestess, including rituals, prayers, the presence of spiritual forces and the transmission of ancient knowledge.

Transcendent Wisdom of the Maya also includes a Foreword by José Luis Tigüilá NABÉ kaxbaltzij, spokesperson of the Maya municipality.

With its compelling detailed personal story by the author and its inclusion of some wonderful full colour photography; Transcendent Wisdom of the Maya is an authentic and fascinating read bringing the Mayan culture to life – recommended for anyone who would like to learn more about this ancient wisdom and worldview.
