I was very happy to hear that Veneficia Publications UK were publishing Martin Pallot’s book of poetry, Around the Corner of my Eye, following his untimely death in 2020, with all royalties going to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. And I found it rather emotional reading his words in the introduction – I could hear his voice as I read them – and seeing he had included me in his ‘thanks’.
However, regardless of all the above I would have brought this book, even if Martin hadn’t been a colleague and dear friend, simply because he was an incredibly talented wordsmith and this is wonderful poetry. Martin had the amazing ability to look at something and wander elsewhere in his imagination, to a world of Nature, myth and legend, then put it all succinctly into writing so we could join him or wander off for a walk of our own.
The poetry in Around the Corner of my Eye is arranged in the order of the seasons, from spring to winter, ending with the poignant beauty of the final poem ‘Afterword’. It is, quite simply, magic.
Needless to say, I highly recommend buying this book if you are able to do so.
