Georgia through Earth, Fire, Air and Water

Georgia through Earth, Fire, Air and Water is a collection of Georgian folk tales co-authored by Michael Berman, Manana Rusieshvili and Ketevan Kalandadze, including some which have never been translated directly into English before.

The book focuses on stories associated with the four elements and includes myths, shamanic stories and tall tales. Berman defines a shamanic story as “one that has either been based on or inspired by a shamanic journey, or one that contains a number of the elements typical of such a journey” and states that “accounts of memorable shamanic journeys were often turned into folktales”.[1]

Alongside the translated tales Berman writes an interesting introduction to the country, history and culture of Georgia as well as including useful relevant explanatory notes and analysis interspersed between the stories; therefore allowing the reader to gain a useful background to this fascinating region which incorporates the features of both Asia and Europe. A captivating read.
